CLARE, HATFIELD, PENARIE, REDBANK WEIR AND OXLEY

CLARE

The locality of Clare includes a sporting reserve and the Clare Public School established in 1985 to service a remote farming community. It is located 155km north of Balranald and 75km south of Ivanhoe on the Balranald Ivanhoe Road.

HATFIELD

On the Ivanhoe Road and once a thriving hotel and coach stop the old pub is now abandoned. You can still experience the great outback saltbush plains, red sandy ridges with breathtaking sunsets, crisp clear night air and star filled skies.

HOMEBUSH HOTEL AT PENARIE

When Burke and Wills passed through the area in September 1860 just west of the current Hotel site, there were already signs of settlement in the vicinity. Seventeen years later on 26 July 1877 a conditional purchase was made and Michael Dowdican applied for the land on which the Homebush Hotel now stands. The date on the façade of the Hotel, 1878, is the year the hotel commenced business.

OXLEY

The Oxley road from Penarie provides an alternative scenic route to Hay. The village of Oxley is located on the Lachlan River and on the edge of the Great Cumbungi Swamp. At Oxley you will find a quaint little church and graveyard.
